When to Seek Professional Help for Earwax Removal

No two ears are the same! When you visit us for a consultation, we’ll start with a quick chat about your hearing health and medical history to see if excessive earwax production could be an ongoing issue. We’ll also do a physical examination of your ears to determine whether impacted earwax is a problem, and make our recommendations for management.

The wax removal process is simple and safe for you as the patient. We may flush out your ears with warm water and/or use specialized tools, such as curettes, to remove it from the ear canal. Our experts will remove earwax quickly and with as little discomfort to you as possible. Our hearing care professionals can also refer to an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist if impacted wax cannot be removed at our clinic.

FAQs About Earwax Removal

What are common symptoms of earwax blockage?

Buildup of earwax can cause stuffiness or itchiness in your ears, poor hearing aid performance, balance issues, dizziness, tinnitus symptoms, and discomfort.

If you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it’s important to contact us so we can help identify if earwax removal is recommended.

Is it safe to remove earwax with cotton swabs?

While cotton swabs seem like a perfect fix for cleaning your ears, they’re not as safe as they look. Cotton swabs can push earwax deeper into your ear, causing more severe impactions than before, and could potentially damage your eardrum as a result.

We do not recommend using cotton swabs for at-home ear cleaning. Most pharmacies have earwax management kits to soften and remove earwax. These can also be purchased at any of our clinic locations.

What are the risks of untreated earwax buildup?

Untreated earwax buildup can cause hearing issues due to the blockage of sound passing through your ear, and some more severe cases can result in tinnitus symptoms.

It’s best to keep your ears clean as much as you can, whether that’s via earwax management kits or professional earwax removal.

Is earwax removal a painful procedure?

Our hearing care specialists ensure that your earwax removal is as comfortable as possible for you. Any risks will always be outlined to you, and if earwax removal cannot be completed in clinic, a referral to a specialist can be made for you.

Can earwax be removed during a hearing test appointment?

Wax removal is not typically offered as a stand-alone appointment. Earwax may be removed prior to a hearing assessment if it may affect the results.
