With Tinnitus Management

Your tinnitus consultation screening will be professional, thorough, and informative.

1. Comprehensive Hearing Assessment

To start, your audiologist will take you through one of our comprehensive hearing assessments to identify if hearing loss has contributed to your tinnitus symptoms. This will involve several in-depth tests to help us understand your current range of hearing and how your tinnitus symptoms may relate to other hearing concerns. This is an important step in determining the best treatment plan for you.

2. Tinnitus Screening

We’ll also complete a tinnitus screening to see how tinnitus has impacted your daily life. For example, does the ringing, buzzing, or humming come and go, or is it constant? Has it affected your sleep schedule, or your working life?

3. Results and Next Steps

Once we have a full understanding of your tinnitus symptoms, we’ll create a plan that works best for you. Some of the ways you can manage your tinnitus include:

a) Hearing Aids

If your hearing test shows that you have hearing loss along with tinnitus symptoms, we’ll offer advanced hearing aid technology as an effective way to manage it. In some cases, you can see an improvement in your tinnitus symptoms with properly tuned hearing aids alone. In other cases, more in-depth treatment may be required.

b) Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

Maico Hearing Service is the only clinic in Newfoundland and Labrador to offer TRT. This involves specialized tinnitus testing, hearing technology/sound therapy, and informational counselling. In some cases, listening exercises may also be required to help improve tinnitus and sound sensitivity issues. TRT is a highly effective treatment for tinnitus and has a very high success rate in helping patients greatly improve their tinnitus and manage it long into the future.

c) Referral to Other Health Professionals

If there are other underlying factors identified during your treatment process that can be addressed by other health care professionals, your hearing care provider can make the appropriate recommendation and/or referral to help ensure that you receive the thorough care that you require.
