In November, we hosted a Demo Days event where patients were invited to try devices from Phonak’s new Infinio product line.
After experiencing this cutting-edge technology, we encouraged participants to share their insights and opinions. Whether they were seasoned hearing aid users or first-timers, their experiences gave us rich, diverse insights into how this technology performs outside of a controlled environment.
Last fall, Phonak introduced their new Infinio product line, which includes the innovative Sphere. Phonak’s Sphere device features a second computer chip specifically designed to remove noise from the environment to allow users to better hear speech in difficult listening situations.
To ensure comparable feedback, all participants were provided premium-level devices for the duration of their 30-day demo period. For the majority—90%—who were able to use two devices, this meant testing two Phonak Audeo I90-Sphere Receiver-in-the-Canal (RIC) hearing aids. The remaining 10% were unable to use hearing aids in both ears, and instead tested out a Phonak Audeo I90 hearing aid with a CROS-I for their unaidable ear. Notably, all but one participant were experienced hearing aid users.
Survey Says…
An impressive 83% of participants who tried the Sphere gave it a rating of 8 out of 10 or higher, with the overall average rating coming in at 8.5. Additionally, 80% of all participants of our Phonak Infinio Demo said they would recommend these devices to others.
One of the reviews that stood out the most was from Larry, who tried two Phonak Audeo I90-Sphere hearing aids. He noticed an immediate difference in the clarity, adaptability, and ease of changing between different programs with these hearing aids compared to his previous models. Larry enjoyed that he didn’t have to constantly fiddle with his hearing aids in conversations, and he deemed these to be the best hearing aids he’s ever worn.
Eliol appreciated the speech-in-noise features of Sphere. When compared to his old hearing aids, he rated the sound quality 10 out of 10. He noticed the biggest difference when he went to a church service, and he heard the minister speak loud and clear. Eliol was also surprised by how well he could hear in noisy environments. With his Phonak Audeo I90-Sphere hearing aids, “speech is plainer and more understandable.”
Kevin also noticed a huge difference in the sound quality with Sphere and liked that he could take a phone call even when his phone wasn’t right next to him in the room. He said the sound quality was “clear as a bell” and made him feel like he’d never had “bad ears” in his entire life!
R.B. said that Phonak Audeo I90-Spheres are the “best hearing aids on the market”. While he initially had some difficulty getting used to controlling the devices with his smartphone, he was pleased to be able to decrease background noise in the wind and in a crowd. He said that “if you’re into the computer-age, you probably can’t get any better”.
Toni noted that the technology really impressed her in a small group. With Sphere, she experienced a noticeable improvement in clarity in small groups compared to her previous devices.
Participants who tried the Phonak Audeo I90-Sphere were provided with an in-clinic demonstration of the ‘Spheric Speech in Loud Noise’ program, which is where the second chip comes into play. We asked them to describe this program in one word at the end of their 30-day demo period. Some of our favourites were from Gerald who described it as “magnificent”, Scott who said it was “phenomenal”, and Ross who found it to be “exceptional”.
Some participants who provided a high overall rating of the technology still reported that they did not find a significant difference compared to their previous hearing aids. L.W. noted that while he “did not notice a lot of difference in sound quality” for his hearing, when asked if he would recommend this technology to others, he said yes because “what would work for others might be fine”.
B.Y. found that she had to adjust the hearing aid settings and volume frequently, noting that she would do better with a remote control. While she found that the technology did not work well for her at first, she gave them a second chance. With further adjustments and a remote control, she had much more success with the Sphere devices and decided to replace her current devices with this new technology.
Of course, the most important part of our Demo Days was for people to try the technology and share their honest thoughts. Although the Sphere technology did not work for all participants, the majority of people were very impressed with the sound quality and noise-cancelling features.
