How It Works
What Happens During a Comprehensive Hearing Assessment?
Your comprehensive hearing assessment will take up to 90 minutes to complete, and you’ll receive your results on the same day. But what happens during the appointment, from start to finish?
Arrival to Your Hearing Clinic
Arrival to Your Hearing Clinic
Upon your arrival to the clinic, a member of our friendly reception staff will welcome you and get your information to check you in for your appointment. We recommend that you arrive with plenty of time to get checked in – and enjoy a coffee, as each person who visits us for an appointment is offered a beverage!
Your audiologist will be notified once you arrive, and they’ll come to greet you for your appointment.
You’re encouraged to bring someone with you for your appointment – a second pair of ears to help understand what’s going on can often be a huge help!

Consultation
We’ll walk you through what happens throughout the evaluation, so you’ll know exactly what to expect from our professional team of hearing care specialists.
Your hearing assessment starts with a chat about you – your medical history and your current lifestyle. We do this so we can better understand your hearing and listening needs, as well as provide a good starting point for our relationship. The journey to better hearing isn’t walked alone; we’re with you, every step of the way.
Evaluation
Evaluation
We’ll look into and around your ears, searching for any abnormalities that may affect your hearing, such as signs of infection, damage, or earwax.
Your hearing assessment may include any or all of the following tests:
Tympanometry (measures how your middle ear is working, detecting fluid behind the eardrum, perforated eardrums, or impacted wax)
Acoustic Reflex Testing (measures your middle ear’s response to loud sounds)
Pure-Tone Audiometry (transmission of different tones and frequencies through earphones)
Bone Conduction Testing (assesses the hearing sensitivity of the inner ear)
Speech Audiometry (tests how well you hear, process, and understand speech)
Speech-in-Noise Testing (how well you can understand speech in the presence of background noise)
Through these tests, we’ll gather a clearer understanding of your current hearing sensitivity and determine the best treatment plan for you.

Common Causes of Hearing Loss
While some people are born with hearing loss, most people acquire it later in life. Hearing loss can be caused by several different factors

Age-related hearing loss, or presbycusis
This is the natural deterioration of the hair cells in the inner ear as we get older.
Illnesses and diseases
Hearing loss can sometimes be associated with certain illnesses and diseases, such as viruses, auto-immune disorders, diabetes, and cardiovascular issues
Sudden hearing loss
Certain viruses and auto-immune conditions can cause sudden decreases in hearing. These losses can be considered a medical emergency and should be treated promptly. If this happens to you or a loved one, contact an audiologist immediately.
Ear infections
Infections can lead to a buildup of fluid or debris in the ear, often leading to a temporary hearing loss. If left untreated, it could result in more permanent damage.
Genetic hearing loss
Hearing loss can be inherited, which may be present at birth or develop later in life.
Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL)
This is the second leading cause of hearing loss, which occurs when hair cells in your inner ear are damaged due to prolonged or excessive exposure to loud noise.
Ear trauma
This could be the result of an explosion, barometric trauma (from extreme changes in atmospheric pressure), or a severe impact to your ear or head.
Ototoxic medications
Certain medications can cause or affect hearing loss or tinnitus, such as cancer treatment drugs.
Earwax
Hearing loss caused by earwax can be easily corrected through professional earwax removal.
Other Causes
Some hearing losses have no known cause, or need to be further investigated by an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist.
